and the winner is ...

Last week I attended the AGM of the local Women's Crisis Support Service. The usual formalities were dealt with, and a fabulous breakfast was enjoyed by all who attended.  Then we got to the interactive bit where sponsors, supporters and helpers were acknowledged.  The Rotary Clubs, individuals, Churches, Real Estate Agents, research groups and businesses who provide goods, services and food to this very worthwhile organisation.

The Country Quilt Co. is a collection point for non-perishable items that help the women and children who are so seriously impacted by domestic violence.  Our Tuesday morning sit and sew group, the Sew 'n' Sews, are particularly supportive and this year we made a quilt to be raffled to get some $$ for the service to use.  Here is the story...

Jen, one of our Sew 'n' Sews was given a 1/3 finished quilt by a lady who was no longer able to sew.  All of the fabric and wadding and templates were included.  Jen bought it in one Tuesday morning.  Over tea and coffee, the plan was hatched that we could all work at finishing the quilt and then give it to the Womens Crisis Service to raise some funds.  An amazing production line went to work for the next few Tuesday mornings and the beautiful raffle quilt was completed.  Special thanks to Linda who finished it off at home!  The photos were taken.  The ticket books were printed, and the raffle took off.  Now, fast forward to the AGM.

The quilt, two pillows and some bunting were all beautifully wrapped in cellophane.  I had to hop up and draw the raffle.  I rummaged about in the bag of tickets and selected the winner.  Christine Young.  There was applause as the winner was in the room with us.  Hooray!  The best part of this story begins now.

Christine and her husband were flooded out in the February 2022 floods.  They had just returned to their home a week before the AGM.  They loved the quilt and were hopeful that it would be coming home with them!  When I heard about this, I'll be honest, I got a bit emotional.  The fabric was supplied to support someone who could no longer sew.  The quilt was made to support others in need.  We managed to sell plenty of tickets.  We all supported the Crisis Service that needs our help.  The winners were so appreciative of their new quilt, and everyone was happy that the right people won.  Even retelling this little story makes me feel proud of all of the people involved. Great job team!!!

It is amazing how we can band together to make such a difference for so many people.

Until next time,

Happy stitching peeps,

Suzanne
